Fall might be the most exciting season when it comes to craft beer. There’s just so much variety over a three-month span.

It starts with the height of fresh hop season in September, as breweries engage in a race against time to get hops from the vine to the tanks in a once-a-year ritual that produces some really exciting creations.

Then there’s Oktoberfest, of course, which offers a chance to produce traditional German-style beers like schwarzbiers, pilsners, festbiers, märzens, hefeweizens and more.

Halloween-inspired beers also enter the picture in October, and breweries love to get creative leading up to the holiday, not only with pumpkin-centric recipes but with spooky, festive branding as well.

By the time November hits, more typical winter beers like stouts and porters start to become more widely available. Those classic sippers and warmers become the perfect way to say goodbye to fall as we get ready to welcome the coldest days of the year.

My name is Josh Duncan and, if you missed my BC Ale Trail debut with the summer roundup, I’m a self-proclaimed craft beer lover living in the beautiful Okanagan. Fall is a season of transition, and I’m thrilled to guide you through another seasonal beer roundup.

Whether you’re looking for something to crack at the end of a fall hike, searching for your next favourite beer at a local brewery or in need of a drink to enjoy while settling in for a hockey, football or playoff baseball game, these are the beers you need to be on the lookout for this fall.

From fresh hops to German-style beers to pumpkin recipes and more, I’ll dive deeper into them all as we check out the latest releases from breweries in each BC Ale Trail region.

Fall Beers in Vancouver, Coast & Mountains

Whistler Brewing is one of the biggest and most recognizable beer brands in BC, but there are other breweries that call the mountain home too. That includes Coast Mountain Brewing, which recently celebrated its 10th birthday with the release of Decade West Coast IPA.

For this anniversary creation, Coast Mountain used a pair of New Zealand hops in Nelson Sauvin and Tropical Fusion. The brewery also used New Zealand-based illustrator Andy Gimson to create an incredible label for the special beer. I love a cool craft beer can, and this one will definitely catch your eye at the liquor store.

From Whistler, we head south down the Sea to Sky Highway to Locality Brewing in Langley, a member of the recently unveiled BC Farm-Based Ale Trail. The family-owned and operated brewery on MacInnes Farms has a couple of unique beers on the menu this fall.

I think people are often drawn to fun beers inspired by different types of foods and non-beer drinks. I certainly am, so the Into the Woods Black Forest Imperial Stout and London Fog Blonde from Locality are certainly on my radar. Black Forest cake might be my favourite dessert, so I’m especially excited to try the stout, which will warm you up at 8.5% ABV. The London Fog Blonde is a more manageable 4.6% ABV, and the addition of milk sugar makes it a silky, velvety brew that is well worth trying.

The final feature from the Vancouver, Coast and Mountains region is from one of the province’s biggest breweries. Parallel 49 Brewing’s Bierfest mixed pack is back, and it’s the perfect way to celebrate Oktoberfest. It contains two of each of the four German-style beers, and each one has won at least one award.

  • Festbier (6% ABV) – The official beer of Munich’s Oktoberfest. A smooth German pale lager meant to be light and refreshing, despite the higher ABV, for long, social gatherings.
  • German pilsner (4.8% ABV) – A crisp, clean and refreshing pale golden lager, first adapted from Czech pilsners nearly 200 years ago. Lighter, drier, crisper and more carbonated than its Czech counterpart.
  • Schwarzbier (4.9% ABV) – A traditional German dark lager (literally translates to “black beer”), with subtle notes of dark chocolate, espresso, coffee or dark-roasted grain.
  • Hefeweizen (5.2% ABV) – If you know any of these beers, this is probably the one. A traditional wheat beer that has become a summer staple on brewery menus all around the world.

Fall Beers on Vancouver Island

We ended the last region with a mixed pack, so let’s start with one on Vancouver Island.

Phillips Brewing has written the book on branding craft beer in BC. Blue Buck is one of the province’s most iconic beers; the Dinosour brand has taken off all over BC and beyond in recent years; and now they’ve started to make some waves with Gorilla Mode.

You’ve probably seen them in liquor stores as 568-ml cans, but they’ve been put together in a 355-ml mixed pack that features two each of Thunder Punch (hazy IPA), Juice Wizard (juicy IPA), Yacht Rocker (tropical hazy IPA) and Peach Slayer (fuzzy peach IPA). They range from 7–9.5% ABV, so they’re best shared or sipped slowly.

Have you ever tried a shaft? It’s a favourite cocktail among my friends and a fun after-dinner treat. The exact numbers can vary, but my personal recipe is one ounce each of vodka and Irish cream, half an ounce of coffee liqueur and two or three ounces of chilled coffee or cold brew. Mix them in an ice-filled shaker, pour into a cocktail glass and sip it through a small straw if you have one available.

While it was invented in Calgary, it has become famously associated with Victoria and one of the city’s breweries has created a beer version. Whistle Buoy Brewing’s Shaft Coffee Stout is made from a blend of dark malts layered together with chocolate, coffee and coconutty hops. It’s rich, it’s creamy and it’s the perfect energizer beer.

7.2% ABV · Fruited Sour

This outlier of a transatlantic treat may not take you to Mars, but it could be the tipping point that gets you talking to strangers.

Fall Beers in the Thompson Okanagan

If you read the start of this blog and said to yourself, “what the heck are fresh hops?,” the time has come for an explanation. Fall is hop harvesting season, but hops are typically dried to be preserved for production throughout the upcoming year. That’s not the case with fresh hop beers, as they’re made with undried cones rushed straight from the field to the brewery and put into production immediately. The result is vibrant floral and grassy notes, as well as intoxicating aromas.

There are a trio of exciting fresh hop beers featured in this region. Abandoned Rail Brewing has a fresh hop lager brewed with Cascade and Centennial hops from Oliver. Cannery Brewing has a fresh hop extra pale ale made with Dolcita hops from the famed Perrault Farms in Washington. And BNA Brewing has released another old Crannóg Ales favourite with a fresh hop twist. The new-look Insurrection Fresh Hop IPA uses fresh Cascade hops from Left Fields Organic Farm, which was the home of Crannóg beer before it was purchased by BNA.

Fall Beers in the Kootenay Rockies

Although a festbier is one of the most traditional German beers you can find, one Kootenay brewery decided that theirs needed a Canadian twist. The Lederhoser Festbier from Encore Brewing is made entirely from Canadian ingredients, and it’s the Gambrinus Mars malt and Sasquatch hops from Hops Connect that really steal the show. Expect notes of biscuit, honey and caramel brittle, but don’t sleep on the hints of fruit flavours as well.

That’s not all Encore is excited about this fall, as the Cranbrook brewery has also dropped the Second Breakfast Smoked Rye Stout. With a deep milk chocolate character, this one is designed to be enjoyed beside an outdoor fire as the weather starts to get snappy.

Barkerville Brewing in Quesnel | 3 Fall Releases

52 Foot Stout

7% ABV · 70 IBU · Stout

Barkerville’s four-time BC Beer Awards winner is a rich, dark and full-bodied stout with just enough hop bitterness to counter the big and bold malt backbone. This face-warming favourite gets a late addition of boreal birch syrup (produced right in Quesnel), lending it a unique savoury flavour.

Hound of Barkerville Brown Ale

5.3% ABV · 17 IBU · Brown Ale

This malt-forward ale is rich and smooth with slight hints of roasted barley. European-style malts lend a sweetness and aroma reminiscent of wildflower honey. Despite the 5.3% ABV, the low hop presence makes this an exceptionally easy-drinking beer.

Wake Up Jake Coffee Ale

Made in partnership with Barkerville’s friends at local coffee shop Moonshine Coffee Roasters, this brown ale has a smooth, bold coffee character with a biscuity backbone. Wake Up Jake is named after the iconic restaurant and saloon in Barkerville!

Fall Beers in Northern BC

Sherwood Mountain Brewhouse is a lesser-known name in the BC craft beer scene, but they’ve been in Terrace for over a decade. Up in northern BC, Sherwood Mountain went international with one of their fall releases. They teamed up with Ocean Reach Brewing, located over 13,000 kilometres away on Australia’s Phillip Island near Melbourne.

The result is a scrumptious, hoppy creation that honours both countries with its name – G’Day Eh Hazy IPA. It delivers a classic IPA resin flavour in the middle of your sip, but that’s sandwiched between light fruity sweetness, as it hits your lips with notes of peach and pineapple.
