Day 1

Exploring The Heights of Squamish

We’re Meagan and Andy of Fuel for the Sole — join us on an ale-venture!

We begin our journey travelling from Horseshoe Bay to Squamish. This stretch of road provides picturesque views of Howe Sound and the coastal mountains that leave us inspired for our journey ahead. As we drive into Squamish, we marvel at the towering granite walls that overlook the town below.

We are welcomed into the town as we visit our first stop for a delicious breakfast at the Zephyr Café. This local cafe is covered in eclectic decor and we are immediately put into a lively mood as we hear Motown music playing. The whole space has a relaxed and laid-back vibe and it feels like a place where the locals gather. We are impressed by their specialty coffees and their wide variety of vegan and gluten-free options. We start the day by sipping our coffees while looking out onto the mountains we can’t wait to explore.

Now that we are fuelled up with coffee and full bellies, we make our way to our first Squamish adventure — the Smoke Bluffs hike. This park is extremely popular with mountain climbers, and the main trail is peppered with narrower trails veering off toward the rock faces. This hike is full of really unique features. About halfway through, we come up to the Octopus Garden, which is a towering flat rock face with multiple crevices the climbers use to ascend. As we walk further along the loop, we get glimpses of the town below with the Stawamus Chief standing guard.

After our hike up Smoke Bluffs, we have the urge to go up even higher! So we hop on the Sea to Sky Gondola. This gondola takes you up the summit where you are blessed with panoramic views of Howe Sound and the coastal mountains. There are plenty of self-guided hikes up at the top. We chose to hike the Panorama Trail, which is an easy 1.3 km loop trail. It leads us to the Chief Overlook Viewing Platform deck that juts out over a sheer drop with impressive views of the ocean and mountains. Being up on this platform gives us a true sense of the majestic beauty and potential for adventure in Squamish. We then walk over the 100 m suspension bridge, which gives us a dramatic 360° view of the area.

We grab a quick lunch at the top as well. Backyard Bites is the perfect place for a snack. We order up a freshly made cheese pizza and some local craft beers and take them out to have lunch with a view.

After a day of adventure, we check into our hotel before heading out for the evening. Our accommodation at Executive Suites is the perfect place to relax. We decide to soak our sore bones in the outdoor hot tub and then freshen up in the condo-style suite.

As we aren’t quite hungry enough yet, we stop in at Cliffside Cider for a pre-dinner drink. This small batch craft blend cidery has so many fun flavours and cider-based cocktails that we can’t choose only one and opt for the flight. We get to sample the OG, Peach, Ginger, Blueberry and Cherry ciders, and each flavour is as bold and fun as the next. We get the feeling that this place is a bit of a hidden gem being tucked away in an alley and brimming with intimacy and a super lively patio.

Now that we have built up a sufficient appetite, we walk over to the Howe Sound Brew Pub (only a block away). This brewpub is very established and a bit of an icon in Squamish. The restaurant is huge, and we realize how great this venue would be for a large group or even an event. We quickly become mesmerized by the menu and its unique flavour combinations. After some indecisive moments, we settle on the Smoked BBQ Chicken Wings, Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, and the Lime Chicken Pizza. No easier is the choice of craft beer as this brewery has heaps of core beers and seasonal beers on tap. We chose the popular Hazy Daze IPA and the Devil’s Elbow IPA, and we loved their smooth finish and slight fruitiness.

Since this day in Squamish has been such a blast, we aren’t quite ready to call it a night, so we head to the super popular Backcountry Brewing. The locals have been raving about the Widowmaker IPA, so we order that up, and it does not disappoint! We also love the Take a Chance on Me Rice Lager, which was incredibly crushable. This brewery is definitely the heart of the town and has a fun and energetic vibe. This place absolutely knows how to make you feel at home.

Day 2

Squamish to Whistler

We wake up almost in disbelief of what an amazing day we had yesterday exploring Squamish. It is an easy town to fall in love with.

We head out for breakfast to a local gem, Fergie’s Cafe. But don’t let the name fool you — it is much more than just a cafe. The restaurant sits on a huge riverside property with cabin rentals and beautiful grounds to explore. The impressive menu features local and fresh foods. We are seated in a cozy cabin with a fireplace crackling in the corner. They have an incredible barista, and we can’t stop at only one oat milk latté, so we order another. Our orders of the Pulled Pork Hash and the Alpha Bowl come out presented like pieces of artwork. They really incorporate so much colour and creativity into their menu, and the food is absolutely delicious to boot.

After such a wonderful tour of Squamish we wonder what could make this trip even better? How about a flightseeing tour with Sea to Sky Air? There is no better way to understand the majesty of Squamish than to head up in the air to see it all from above.

We meet our passionate and knowledgeable pilot who makes us feel at ease. As we fly higher and higher into the air, the peaks of the mountains start to reveal themselves. We are taken over the Tantalus Range where we see alpine lakes, monstrous glaciers, rocky peaks and a secret waterfall. It is difficult to not get emotional when you are soaring so high up above such majestic land.

Before we head up to Whistler, we stop in at A-FRAME Brewing Co for a beer and some lunch. Walking into the taproom feels like coming home to a chill, BC lakeside cabin. You’re instantly greeted by the open concept bar which is surrounded by a warm wood interior and rustic tabletops. Outside, they have a patio that’s hung with string lights and seemingly encapsulated by mountains (in good Squamish fashion).

The beers are unpretentious, clean, and delicious. Each one is named after a BC lake, adding to the cabin vibe. We order the Gun Lake IPA and the Okanagan Lake Cream Ale, which both go perfectly with the tacos we get from the resident food truck, Luz Tacos.

It’s tempting to get one of each taco type, but we settle on Pollo Chipotle, Carnitas, Al Pastor, Vengan Ranchero, Frijoles Refritos, and Asada—with a side of hard-to-resist, fresh churros. Because why not, right? We have to fuel up for Whistler!

brewery

As we arrive in Whistler, we make a quick stop to hike the Train Wreck Trail. This easy one-hour hike takes us to the site of a train wreck that occurred in 1956. Here, multiple boxcars sit in the forest, covered in colourful graffiti art. While hiking this trail we also cross a suspension bridge and grab some spectacular views of Cheakamus River.

We drive into Whistler just in time to check into our hotel room at the fabulous Westin Resort and Spa. The Westin is located right at the base of Whistler mountain and is situated perfectly for every summer and winter activity. We have such an incredible view of Whistler Mountain and the village down below that we have to take a moment to sit and gaze in wonderment.

It’s time for dinner, and we are in the mood for BBQ! We casually stroll through Whistler Village and make our way to Hunter Gather for a meal and a brew. Hunter Gather is an amazing casual BBQ joint with cafeteria-style service. The vibe is super chill, and the menu is unique, fresh and locally sourced. We decide to order the Smoked Pork Ribs and the House Smoked Salmon, and both meals are cooked to perfection. Since this restaurant has so many BC craft beers on tap, we order up a beer flight so we can sample a few. We try the House of Funk Bavarian Lager, Fernie Huckleberry Wheat, Coast Mountain Cloudraker Wheat and Coast Mountain Woodnutt Brown, and they pair perfectly with the smoky meal.

We head over to RMU Blackcomb for a nightcap. This pub is located in the Upper Village and is a great spot for après drinks with a rotating selection of local craft beers. There is a cozy indoor pub and a large outdoor patio. We decide to snuggle up by the outdoor firepit in some cozy chairs and say cheers to our first day in Whistler.

Day 3

Whistler

We wake up early and well rested for another action-packed day in Whistler.

A stop in at a local favourite is a must for breakfast. The Gone Eatery is tucked away behind a bookstore and serves up delicious comfort food. We opt for a traditional British-style breakfast packed with the protein we need to fuel our day.

The Sea to Sky region is on Squamish and Lil’wat land and their peoples’ history and culture is rooted deeply in the mountains and forests. The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) offers hourly guided tours that take you through the rich history of their people. It is a must stop in order to truly understand and appreciate the land you are visiting. As we walk through this tour, we marvel at the traditional clothing and craftsmanship of the Squamish and Lil’wat people and we are elated to know that their traditions live on.

We stop in at the Thunderbird Cafe located in the SLCC for a quick lunch. They serve delicious traditional Indigenous foods like bannock, salmon and venison.

If you have been to Whistler and only explored its village, you are missing out on nearby Function Junction. We take a quick 10-minute drive south to get to this area that is most often used by locals. It’s a unique area brimming with breweries, bakeries, and lots of activities. There is plenty to do here to fill up an entire day.

First, we head to Coast Mountain Brewing and hang out in its welcoming taphouse. We become instant friends with the approachable bartender, and the experience is so enjoyable that we stay for an hour. Coast Mountain opened its doors in 2016 and brews up a wide range of complex and flavourful beers. We enjoy the fruity and smooth east coast style Hope You’re Happy IPA and the citrusy Cloudraker Wheat Ale made with Canadian wheat. Coast Mountain has a modern take on craft beers and makes some of our favourite local IPAs.

The weather is starting to turn, so we begin looking for a unique indoor activity. Luckily, Forged Axe Throwing is located right beside Coast Mountain Brewing, so we drop in for a one-hour session. This is our first time ever trying axe throwing and we are complete novices, but the staff are so helpful and give us pro tips along the way. Their feedback is so constructive that we end up hitting several bullseyes! Forged Axe Throwing is definitely a fun activity for everyone, and it’s also a pretty intense cardio workout too.

Since it’s still a bit drizzly outside, we are happy to head over to another brewery within Function Junction. The Whistler Brewing Company was established in 1989, which means it is one of the pioneers of the British Columbia craft brewing movement. We walk into a lively and huge taphouse with lots of room to socialize. It is definitely the place for locals to gather and have fun. We see that there is a wide selection of craft beers on tap, and we just can’t choose between their nine choices. So we opt for the flights and get to sample eight of their beers. Whistler Brewing Co.’s craft beers are not heavy in hops, and it is refreshing to try some malt-forward flavours. Our favourites were the Bear Paw Honey Lager, Hazy Trail Pale Ale, and the seasonal Grapefruit Ale.

After a full day of activity we head back to our hotel to take a dip in the outdoor hot tub and lounge in our robes before heading out for a night in the village.

We meander through the charming streets looking for an aperitif. What better place to start than Whistler’s coziest pub? The Fitzsimmons Pub is Whistler’s original BC craft beer pub, offering eight taps of constantly rotating local craft beer. It’s an incredibly cozy and warm place to start a conversation and meet someone new. The inviting couches, board games and funky decor make us want to linger. But alas, our bellies are calling for a meal.

The breathtakingly beautiful Four Seasons Resort is just around the corner and has amazing amenities, including the Braidwood Tavern. This mountainside tavern is vibrant and welcoming with a huge selection of local craft beers. But don’t let the word “tavern” mislead you — this place has an absolutely delectable menu as well. Neither of us can resist Steak Frites so we both put in our orders (medium rare, of course). Much to our surprise, we are presented with homemade tavern snacks: spiced popcorn and kettle-cooked chips! Every bite we have is exquisite and we will definitely be back.

Day 4

Whistler to Pemberton

We wake up in our warm, comfy bed and think about the day ahead of us. We are so excited to head off to explore Pemberton today.

We have some hikes planned for the day, so we pick a breakfast spot that will give us the energy we need. Peaked Pies is located right in Whistler Village, where they make handmade Australian meat pies (which is quite fitting considering the huge population of Australians living in Whistler). We order up the Traditional Aussie beef pie and add on the “Get Peaked” so it’s piled high in mashed potatoes, mushy green peas and gravy. This is a meal and a half and quite an affordable option for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

restaurant

We begin our 30-minute drive north toward Pemberton. This iconic drive takes you past the aptly named Green Lake as you slowly begin to be surrounded by more and more mountains. We decide to stop at One Mile Lake, which sits right before the entrance into Pemberton.

One Mile Lake is a family-friendly lake and a popular summer spot for locals. There is an easy 1.6 km loop trail around the lake that offers views of the surrounding area. This loop trail also connects to the Sea to Sky Trail, Nairn Falls and Lumpy’s Epic. Lumpy’s Epic is a more challenging 7.6 km hike that takes you up some rocky ridges and rewards you with views of Mount Currie and Green River. Yet again, we are blown away by the views from above.

After a chilly hike, we are in the mood for some warm food and drinks. We head over to North Arm Farm, which is a family-run farm, and we immediately get a sense of family upon driving onto the property. There is plenty to do here including U-pick fruit, a market stocked with farm-fresh produce, and a farm-to-table kitchen serving baked goods and real comfort food. We take our ham, apple and smoked gouda panini, pulled pork panini, and kale, zucchini and ham soup out to the patio to enjoy while we watch the chickens and pigs play.

Now that our hearts and bellies are full, we head off to what may be one of the most exhilarating adventures of our lives with Blackcomb Helicopters. This company offers all kinds of helicopter adventures from Vancouver to Whistler and Pemberton including Heli Skiing, Heli Paddleboarding and even Heli Weddings. We meet with our pilot who provides us with a comprehensive safety lesson and then up we go! Our minds are absolutely blown away by the beauty of Mount Currie and the north and south peaks of the Northern Garibaldi Range. We are able to make a quick touchdown at Marriage Lake, which is a stunningly blue alpine lake surrounded by mountains. What a location for a helicopter-assisted wedding! Seeing Pemberton’s mountains from above gives us a true appreciation for this area’s natural beauty.

After our thrilling trip up in the air, we are safely brought back down to earth. We now have a new and improved perception of what Pemberton offers and we are excited to experience more of its culture.

We pop over to the Pemberton Brewing Company to taste some of the local flavours. This tasting room has an industrial vibe with an open brewery where you can watch the workers and even ask them questions about the brewing process. This brewery takes advantage of locally grown hops to create a seriously smooth IPA. Pemberton Brewing Co. is all about experimenting and they are always coming up with new flavours, especially when they can use local and seasonal fruits to inspire their recipes. This taphouse is also a popular spot for local mountain bikers and one of the most popular trails, Cream Puff, ends right near the brewery. This has inspired their Cream Puff Pale Ale, which is our personal favourite. We love this smooth and creamy ale so much that we grabbed a four pack to go.

We want to ensure we get the full Pemberton craft beer experience so we head over to the town’s second brewery, The Beer Farmers. This brewery takes you into Pemberton’s countryside to a fourth generation organic family farm. The brewery is located on a huge acreage surrounded by mountains and is absolutely picturesque. We make our way to what may be the world’s most adorable tasting room situated in a large wooden barn. We chat with the bartender for some time before ordering our drinks. She tells us the story of how this family farm came to be and how passionate the family is about producing locally grown and crafted beers. She explains that they do a few things and they do them really well, and we agree. The beer flights allow us to sample every single beer, cider and sour they have on tap and we enjoy every sip. Our top favourites have to be the Cover Crop Hazy IPA, the Farmer’s Daughter White, and the Salted Plum Sour.

After all of this activity, we have built up quite an appetite so we head over to the popular Mile One Eating House. This place has an incredible menu of BC-inspired comfort food and we quickly eyeball the Mile One Burger, Ribeye Steak, and Mac ‘N’ Cheese. The food here is presented like pieces of art; each bite reveals the quality and care they put into their food. They also have an impressive selection of local craft beer to choose from and they pair absolutely perfectly with this comforting food.

We are in total awe of all the beauty, culture and history we have experienced in Pemberton. We complete our night at Pemberton Valley Lodge where we are met with some of the friendliest and most helpful staff we have ever witnessed. This charming hotel is surrounded by the area’s coastal mountains and is the perfect base for all of Pemberton’s four seasons of adventure.

As we wind down with a dip in the hot tub and hunker in beside the fireplace, we reminisce over our day and realize how quickly we have fallen in love with this town.

Day 5

Pemberton to Home (With a Quick Stop in Whistler)

We wake up to our last day in Sea to Sky paradise and start to plan our day with a few extra adventures left in store.

We fuel up on breakfast at Grimm’s Gourmet & Deli, the local diner that really romanticizes small town life. The entire staff and all of the patrons know each other. People are chatting all across the cafe and it is another reason we think Pemberton feels like home.

restaurant

With a full week of travel, adventure and exploration behind us, we decide to stop in at the Scandinave Spa Whistler on our way back home. The Scandinavian Baths offer a way to truly disconnect and are a pure source of relaxation. We spend hours here taking in the hot baths, cold baths, steam rooms, and relaxation areas. This is all experienced in pure silence while being surrounded by the ancient forests of Whistler. It is the perfect way for us to reflect on our journey.

Now that we are at peak relaxation, we stop in at our final BC Craft Brewery. The Whistler Brewhouse (High Mountain Brewing Company) is located right in the heart of Whistler Village. It is a beautiful autumn day and we are lucky enough to be able to sit out on the large patio and enjoy watching the crowds walk by. The menu is full of inspired pub foods and we fill our table with Garlic Fries, BBQ Chicken Wings, Crispy Brussel Sprouts, and Mountain Peak Margherita Pizza. This brewhouse also produces their craft beers on site using BC grown grain. All four of their flagship beers are fresh and vibrant in flavour. We especially loved the 5 Rings IPA, which is a west coast style IPA with a sweet malt backbone.

Even though the Sea to Sky area stretches on for over 90 kilometers, there is a profound cohesiveness to it all. The people’s faithful respect for the land, the deep rooted history and culture, and the spectacular natural beauty is something that only this area of the world holds. We share a true love affair with Sea to Sky Country and it will forever hold a place in our hearts.

Editor’s Note: continue your Sea to Sky ale-venture by exploring Lillooet, now a part of the Sea to Sky Ale Trail. Though known for its hot, dry summers and mild autumn weather, Lillooet is a true four-season destination. There is an abundance of sunshine in the semi-desert climate and no shortage of outdoor activities, including fishing, hiking, biking, boating, or snowshoeing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter. Lillooet is also home to Lillooet Brewing – a stop you won’t want to miss!
